Please note: If you have a stray animal, under state law the animal must be reported to or turned over to an animal control agency where it will be held for a period of time in order to give the owner the opportunity to reclaim it.

Riverside Humane Society Pet Relinquishment Requirements

The Riverside Humane Society does not charge a relinquishment fee. However, a tax-deductible monetary donation of any amount is greatly appreciated. The Pet Adoption Center is a non-profit 501(c)(3) public benefit charitable organization supported solely by private donations and fundraising projects. The Pet Adoption Center accepts kittens, cats, puppies and dogs, but space is limited – we can’t take them all!

• The person relinquishing the pet must be the rightful owner and will be required to fill out a relinquishment form. In the case of an owner being incapacitated or deceased, the person turning in the animal must show proof of relationship to the owner.

• Animals must be healthy and social.

• Cats must pass a FELV/FIV medical test and a behavior evaluation (done at the center).

• Dogs must pass a medical exam and behavior evaluation (done at the center).

• Owners should bring all medical records with the animal.

If you would like more information about relinquishing your pet to a breed-specific rescue organization, contact the Pet Adoption Center for referral lists.
