Humane Education
The Riverside Humane Society promotes responsible pet ownership and humane treatment of all animals by providing educational programs to school children, scout troops, and community and service organizations, as well as at a variety of community events.
Pet-Assisted Therapy
Volunteers take dogs on monthly visits to several area hospitals, convalescent, rehabilitation and assisted-living facilities. This program provides much-needed socialization for all participants. Patients and residents look forward to seeing, petting and holding our furry friends. The program also provides valuable socialization for the dogs. They get used to riding in cars, exploring new environments, and meeting new people.
Volunteering RHSPAC’s many volunteers contribute a valuable service to the community by making Riverside a more humane place for all living creatures. Not only do volunteers help care for shelter animals, they also reach out to the community by providing free services such as Pet Assisted Therapy, Pet Behavior Help Line and assisting with Educational Outreach events. Pet Behavior Help Line
Often all it takes to create or restore a happy bond between a human and his/her companion animal is an understanding of the reasons for a pet’s behavior and how to modify that behavior. The Riverside Humane Society offers free consultation for behavior problems. For information on common pet behavior problems and to request help, visit www.petbehaviorhelpline.org.
Pet Relinquishment The Pet Adoption Center is a limited-entry facility that takes in cats and dogs from owners who can no longer care for them. Each pet must undergo an evaluation of health and behavior prior to being accepted. It is important that each animal is healthy, non-aggressive, friendly and adoptable. Owners must provide proof of ownership, any medical / veterinary records, and complete an extensive admission form, providing much needed health, diet, grooming and behavior information about the pet. If space is not available, we refer pet owners to other facilities and organizations. For more information about relinquishing your pet – click here.
Spay and Neuter Assistance As an advocate for the sterilization of companion animals, the Riverside Humane Society works to educate the public on benefits of spaying and neutering to reduce health problems in animals and end pet overpopulation and unnecessary euthanization. (The Humane Society of the United States estimates that 3-4 million unwanted cats and dogs are euthanized each year.) Contact us for information on low-cost spay/neuter options in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.
