A tongue-in-cheek fundraising event for homeless cats and dogs will soon lock up Riverside residents until enough money is raised to spring them from a kennel.

The Saturday, June 30, event will be staged by the Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center, which takes in healthy and adoptable cats and dogs with the goal of finding them good, loving homes.

No healthy, adoptable animal is ever destroyed there, but the center — founded as the Riverside Humane Society in 1897 — can only admit as many relinquished pets as there is space.
