Is your puppy or young dog chewing your shoes, closes, rugs, or furniture? Does he get “mouthy” or “nippy” when playing? Does he get too excitable and jumpy? You’ve got a normal puppy on your hands! Puppies need education and guidance to become good canine citizens.
Here are some tips:
- If your dog chews on your shoes, be sure to store your shoes away so he can’t get at them. Normal puppies enjoy the gum massaging the a good chew on a shoe provides. Puppies also love the smell of their owner, it brings them comfort.
- If your dog gets mouthy and excited when you pet him, start petting him for shorter periods of time (just a minute), and stop before he gets excited. Offer him a chewy toy with your other hand while you pet him.
- If your dog jumps up on you, he is probably seeking your attention. Turn your back to him and only give him attention when he has all four on the floor. You will be “teaching” your dog not to jump up, so be patient and realize you will need to do this over and over until he “learns”.
- Never punish your puppy, it will just make matters worse.
